UNILAG IMMORTALIZES LATE PROF. ADETOKUNBO BABATUNDE SOFOLUWE


On 12th may 2012, the University community was thrown into a mourning mood when the death of Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe (the 10th Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos) went viral on social networks and the internet in general. Everyone was calm and hoping that it was just another lie of the social networkers and bloggers but it was only a matter of time before
it dawned on us all that the mathematician and computer science scholar has indeed transited to the great beyond.
It’s a year already and the University Community-his colleagues, staff and students still could not ignore Professor Sofoluwe’s meekness, leadership skills, teamwork and his fatherly role which he displayed in the various capacities he served as a University teacher, an administrator, a deputy Vice Chancellor and as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos over a period of 36 years.
An exhibition tagged” Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe in Reminiscence” was held to showcase the works of the late mathematician and computer scientist.
The one year remembrance of Professor Sofoluwe commenced with an open air prayer session on 15th may at the Main Auditorium followed by the Annual Memorial lecture organized by the Lagos state chapter of the Unilag Alumni association. The lecture which was delivered by Professor Oye Ibidapo Obe was modeled under five headings: The quintessential ABS, Science and curiosity-beyond calculations and stochastic, Education, science, technology and innovation, Universities as innovation hubs and Conclusion.
Other measures put in place to immortalize the late don was the renaming of the New Sports Hall dedicated by the UNILAG Senior Staff Club to the memory of the late 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahamon Bello, negotiations are ongoing in the Senate to grant approval to naming the park in front of the Senate building, Professor Sofoluwe’s park.
