The Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos Professor Mopelola Omoegun while teaching a class of final year students on Wednesday, 29th January was grossly disappointed at the fact that the students attended the lectures late as most of them walked in several minutes after the lecture had commenced. Sources confirmed that this got her
worried about the students attitude to lectures and academics in general.
The situation was aggravated when an improperly dressed female student walked right in front of the Dean. Furious, the Dean accosted her for attending lectures late and also faulted her dressing querying her for dressing loosely, shabbily and irresponsibly.
The guidance and counseling Don dropped a side of the “spaghetti”, revealing her cleavage amidst her colleagues compelling her to excuse the class for her hostel in order to change her clothes. This development brings to the fore, the fundamentals of ethics (the theory of values concerned with the problem of morality) which conventionally, connotes in totality, an individual’s character, mode of dressing, personal and interpersonal relationship, contentment, et cetera.
Robert Greene in his classical book- 48 laws of power, opined that “be royal in your fashion; act like a king to be treated like one; the way you carry yourself will often determine how you are treated, in the long run, appearing vulgar or common will make people disrespect you; for a king respects himself and inspires the same sentiment in others, by acting regally and confident of your powers, you make yourself destined to act a crown”.
An adage says, “Dress the way you want to be addressed”. Hence, setting a standard for an acceptable dressing code which by implication, a well-dressed person is accorded respect and seen as responsible while a half-naked one is perceived as an ill-trained, ill-mannered and an irresponsible person taking into consideration that appearance is reality.
It had been acknowledged that some students who dress indecently do that without the knowledge of their parents- leaving home with decent clothing only to get to school on spaghetti’s, leggings and tight jean. Taking a closer look at the situation, this writer met with few students to get their opinions on the development vis-à-vis their stand on the implementation of a dress code. There were varying responses as to the appropriateness of observing one as 85% agreed to it, 10% undecided and 5% disagreed stating that it was partial to beam searchlights on female students alone considering the fact that a couple of male students, office workers and female lecturers also dress inappropriately. Citing an instance that the dress code in the education sector disapproves dressing in jean and tight trousers yet, some female lecturers dress in them especially at the Faculty of Education where the incident occurred.
